While the turbocharger is arguably the most critical part of any EcoBoost® engine variant, each component is interdependent on the others, and only in tandem do they maximize fuel-efficient performance on Chicago roads. Direct fuel injection is a fuel-delivery system in which a high-pressure fuel pump sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder. When combined with a highly precise engine control unit (ECU), direct injection systems tightly regulate the amount of fuel delivered at any given moment, cool the charge to prevent premature ignition and engine knocking, and increase compression ratios to improve fuel efficiency.
A camshaft regulates the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves to control the engine’s “breathing.” Ultimately, how long, how far, and when these valves open and close determines engine power and efficiency.
Variable camshaft timing means the opening and closing of the valves are based on your current RPM and engine load. This enables engineers to optimize the EcoBoost® engine to take advantage of “valve overlap,” which is a brief moment when both intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time. During overlap, fresh air and incoming fuel expel the remaining exhaust gases while simultaneously cooling the combustion chamber and the exhaust valve. This enables higher compression ratios and prevents engine knocking, improving efficiency.
A turbocharger is an efficiency measure that uses wasted exhaust gases to spin a turbine, which is connected to a compressor by a shaft. This forces pressurized air into the cylinders, enabling greater fuel combustion. By using gases that would otherwise be wasted as exhaust to drive additional combustion, the Ford EcoBoost® engine can achieve the power output of a much larger engine while occupying a fraction of the space.
